DURHAM, N.C.On Duke's east campus, Blue Devils basketball player Stanley Borden and 50 others students ran 7.8 kilometers Wednesday, in an effort to raise $7,800 for earthquake victims in Turkey.
As of February 15, more than 41,000 people have died from the earthquake that struck Turkey.
Borden, who has family in Turkey, said he felt like he had to do something.
"Even if no one from my family is injured or has died, it's almost like I'm not there when something big is happening." Borden said. "That for me made me feel like I had to do something. I had to get something done."
Borden said he was overwhelmed by the support fellow students have shown.

“It’s a beautiful message to see everybody come out to help people thousands of miles away. People they don’t know their names or anything else, it’s just people,”Borden said. "The fact that we've been able to do this at all and have this turnout is awesome."

Even people who are not students ran today. Josie Pegg drove an hour and a half to take part.

“The earthquake was so devastating to so many people and it’s great that this young guy is out here doing whatever he can to help people who are in need," Pegg said.

As of Wednesday night, Borden has raised about $5,500. People can still donate to help Borden reach his goal.
