Duke announced Tuesday that it will no longer require masks or face coverings in "outdoor congregate settings," which includes Duke sporting events in outdoor venues.
Fans will be urged to bring a mask in the event "physical distancing cannot be effectively maintained" outdoors. Duke will still require masks or face coverings at indoor events, like basketball games, regardless of vaccination status.
The mask mandate inside will apply to all indoor venues, including spaces for events that are associated with the outdoor sports. Those masks will be required for every attendee above five years old and must be worn at all times except while eating or drinking.
Masks will also be required for all guests using Duke Transit services.
Duke also encouraged guests to stay home if feeling sick or if recently exposed to COVID-19.
"We strongly encourage all individuals to be fully vaccinated before attending events on the Duke University campus and expect all visitors to adhere to university, local, and state guidelines," the release says. "No proof of vaccination or negative test result will be required for athletic events other than men's and women's basketball."
