Muslims in post-9/11 America, including the political integration and assimilation experiences of Arab Americans and U.S. Muslims, will be among the topics discussed during a live webcast with Jen’nan Ghazal Read, associate professor of sociology and global health at Duke. This latest installment of Duke’s new online "office hours” series will run live on Duke’s Ustream channel beginning at 2 p.m. EDT Friday, Sept. 11.

Viewers can submit questions in advance or during the session by email to live@duke.edu, on the Duke University Live Ustream page on Facebook or via Twitter with the tag #dukelive.

A Carnegie scholar studying Muslim American political assimilation, Read is the author of the book “Culture, Class and Work Among Arab-American Women” (LFB Scholarly Publishing, 2004). She recently wrote an op-ed about media coverage of Muslims during Ramadan and blogged about President Obama’s speech to the Muslim world earlier this summer.

During the 2008 presidential election, Read addressed the factors that influenced the Muslim American vote and published research indicating that Muslim Americans are in step with the American public on political engagement and social issues.

Duke’s Office of News and Communications launched Online Office Hours series on July 31 with economist Dan Ariely, the best-selling author of “Predictably Irrational.” Other guests included David Goldstein, director of the Center for Human Genome Variation at Duke, professor of African and African American Studies Mark Anthony Neal and Bill Chameides, dean of Duke’s Nicholas School of the Environment.
