Durham, NC -- Save money – and help save the Eno River – by taking advantage of Duke’s discount tickets to the 30th annual Festival for the Eno River over the July Fourth weekend.
Duke faculty and staff who order tickets before June 26 receive a 20 percent discount off gate prices. The discount price is $12 for a one-day pass and $28 for a three-day pass. Children age 12 and under and adults age 65 and older get in free.
Rick Sloane, a statistician for Duke’s Center for the Study of Aging, will be at the festival this year – as he has been for most of the last 20 years.
“I was initially attracted to the festival because of the music, but then I realized it was a benefit for the Eno River Association,” Sloane said.
For the past few years, Sloane has not only enjoyed good food and music but also volunteered with the composting program.
“The Eno Festival has literally written the book about how to reduce waste during an event like this,” he said. “Over the years they have increased the amount composted and decreased the amount of trash going into the landfill.”
This year, Sustainable Duke will sponsor the festival’s efforts to reduce landfill-bound waste and have a “Trash Free” event.
“Supporting the ‘trash free’ efforts – one of the key sustainability elements of the annual festival – seemed like a great way to contribute from our Green Grant program,” Said Tavey Capps, Duke’s environmental sustainability director.
The money provided by Sustainable Duke will offset the cost of providing compostable cutlery for food vendors, educational materials and signs and maintenance for existing composting and recycling sites. It will also help pay for a new cistern for reclaimed water at the festival.
The festival is 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, July 3, and Saturday, July 4; and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday, July 5, at the West Point on the Eno city park in Durham.
To order tickets, call (919) 620-9099 and dial 0 for the operator. Tickets must be ordered and paid for by 5 p.m. June 26 to receive the Duke discount. Credit cards are accepted.
Employees who order tickets can pick them up at the festival “Will Call” booth at the County Stadium Park & Ride lot when they show their DukeCard ID.
