Duke in Pictures: Learning Through Photography
Friday, May 1, 2009
Durham, NC -- Club Boulevard Elementary School students showcase the photography and writing work that they did in the spring semester under the supervision of Duke student interns in the Literacy Through Photography project.
The project is sponsored by Duke's Center for Documentary Studies.
Students are assigned to take photos of people and objects that are important parts of their lives and then to write short essays or poems about the photos. Students in grades 3-5 participated.
The photos are on exhibit at Through the Lens on East Chapel Hill Street in downtown Durham. The work will be on display through May 2. The photos ranged from family pets to playgrounds to more abstract images, such as the glowing eyes of a lit jack-o-lantern.
Participating Duke students included Marissa Bergmann, Rachel Blum, Veronica Bustabad, Michael Cappetto, Anne Clark, Ghisly Echezuria, Emily Hadden, Andrew Hibbard, Esther Jeohn, Emily Nuckolls, Rali Peneva, Emily Robertson, Maya Robinson and Nicholas Wiesner.
Below, Club Blvd. student Zach Lemons explores some of his schoolmates' photographs and writings.
