Durham, NC -- The Duke University and Durham police departments will conduct a joint mock exercise Sunday, May 24, as part of their emergency response training.
The rapid deployment tactical exercise will begin at about 7 a.m. at Gilbert-Addoms Residence Hall on Duke’s East Campus.
Most of the drill will be inside the building, with 35 participants from Duke and Durham police departments, Durham Fire and Rescue and Duke and Durham EMS playing roles in the mock exercise that involves gunshots fired in the residence hall. Officers will fire paintballs and use devices that simulate popping sounds.
“By testing and evaluating our training and plans with partner agencies, we position ourselves to be best prepared for an efficient tactical response in critical emergencies,” said Aaron Graves, associate vice president for campus safety and security.
The rapid deployment technique teaches officers first on the scene to assemble a contact team of officers to enter the building and locate the threat. Next, a rescue team of officers goes inside and assists those who may be injured.
The drill will be isolated to the west wing of Gilbert-Addoms, but passersby may see officers, emergency vehicles and a lot of activity around the building through 11 a.m.
