Eric Meyers honored by American Schools of Oriental Research

Durham, NC -- Eric M. Meyers, Bernice and Morton Lerner Professor of Judaic Studies and director of the Center for Jewish Studies, has received the Richard J. Scheuer Medal from the American Schools of Oriental Research (ASOR), given to an individual who has provided outstanding, long term support and service contributions to ASOR. The award, which the organization gives out only when appropriate, recognizes Meyer’s leadership in the field and in the organization for more than 35 years.
Meyers joined ASOR’s Executive Committee in 1980, when he was named First Vice President for Publications. He remained in this post from 1980–1990, also serving as editor of Biblical Archaeologist during the same period. When his ini- tial term as First Vice President concluded, he then served as President of ASOR from 1990–1996. He remained on the organization’s executive committee and recently served a third term as its president from 2006-07.
Meyers has authored or co-authored 9 books, edited many others, and has published widely in the fields of Hebrew Bible, biblical archaeology, and Second Temple Judaism. Among his publications in Hebrew Bible are two Anchor Bible commentaries with his wife Carol L. Meyers. He is also a recipient of ASOR’s 1997 G.E. Wright Publication Service Award, in recognition of his work as editor of the Oxford Encyclopedia of Archaeology in the Near East.
