Three Faculty Elected to ECAC

Three faculty members were elected to the Executive Committee of the Academic Council (ECAC) for the first time Thursday.

Amy Bejsovec, associate professor of biology, Stanley Abe, associate professor of Chinese art, theory and criticism in Department of Art, Art History, and Visual Studies, and Ana Barros, professor in the Pratt School of Engineering, were all elected to two-year terms.  The terms begin July 1.

Bejsovec joined the Duke faculty in 2000 and has served on the Trinity Arts & Sciences Council from 2001 to 2003, and on the Academic Council since 2006.  In other service to the university, she has served as chair of admissions for the NIH funded Cell and Molecular Biology (CMB) Training Program since 2006, and has for 8 years taught the largest enrollment core course in the Biology Department, Bio 118 Genetics and Molecular Biology. 

Abe came to Duke in 1994 and has served on the Library Council (2002–2005), Arts and Sciences Council (1995–1997), and Executive Committee of the Asian Pacific Studies Institute (1995–1997 and 2005–2007) as well as the Dean's Committee on Visual Culture Education (2005–2006), President's Special Committee on Multicultural Space (2000–2001), and Dean's Curriculum Committee on Diversity (1996–1997).

Barros joined Duke in 2004. Since then she has served in the Engineering Faculty Council, several departmental and school committees including the Pratt APT committee, and she served as a member of the recent dean search committees for the Pratt and Nicholas Schools. 

The three join returning ECAC members: Chair Paula McClain of political sicience; Dr. Amy Abernethy of oncology; Dona Chikaraishi of neurobiology; Thomas Metzloff of law; and Faculty Secretary John Staddon of psychology and neuroscience.

ECAC is responsible for setting the agenda of Academic Council meetings, recommending faculty appointments to university committees and other faculty governance tasks.
