Genocide, water scarcity and other environmental issues are among the social justice themes of a textile art exhibit in the Duke Chapel from March 30 to April 14.

The exhibit of works by Hillsborough, N.C., artist Hollis Chatelain will feature 10 large, colorful and intricately detailed quilts hanging in the triforium. Each piece in the “Hope for Our World” exhibit examines a theme of social justice.

The exhibit also will include Art in Activism Day on April 5, which begins at 1 p.m. with a conversation between Chatelain and Duke Chapel Dean Sam Wells. Following at 2 p.m. is a guided tour of the exhibit with the artist and a chance to visit information tables from local advocacy groups.

Chatelain, whose educational background is in design and photography, began her career as a textile artist in Africa. Her distinctive use of colors and imagery and her dye-painted scenes of multicultural life have brought her international recognition.

“Since 2000, much of my work has reflected my feelings upon worldwide issues,” Chatelain said. “Whether these concerns are social or environmental, they have overwhelmed my dreams and manifested themselves in my art.”
