Want to learn more about the Science Drive project?

The new streetscape design will be unveiled during a town hall meeting on Friday (Jan. 11) at 2 p.m. in 111 Biological Sciences Building, 125 Science Drive.

Starting the week of Jan. 7, a portion of Science Drive near the Bryan Center will be reduced to one lane as construction gets underway on a six-month project to upgrade utilities infrastructure and improve the area’s appearance. Construction will span from the Knut Schmidt-Nielsen “camel” statue to the Math/Physics Building. The project, overseen by Duke’s Facilities Management Department, is scheduled for completion this summer.

During construction, a temporary traffic signal will be installed to allow motorists to enter and exit the Bryan Center. Pedestrian detours will be erected on some sidewalks in the area.

Motorists and pedestrians are urged to allow more time and travel cautiously during the project. Permit holders and visitors who use the Bryan Center Parking Garage are also encouraged to allow more time to park.

For now, the work will not affect Duke bus routes. Future route changes will be posted in advance at the bus stop on the round-about at the end of Science Drive. Alerts will also be posted on the Duke’s Parking & Transportation website at www.parking.duke.edu.

The project’s first phase involves replacing aging water, steam and electrical lines between the Math/Physics building and the camel statue on Science Drive. During the second phase, scheduled to begin in the spring, improvements will be made to the street, sidewalks, crossings and landscaping.
