Durham, NC -- The Hart Leadership Program (HLP) celebrated its 20th anniversary Nov. 9-10 with a weekend filled with presentations by students, alumni, and faculty. The event brought together 20 years of HLP participants, from founders such as Bruce Payne and Joel Fleishman to current Duke students taking HLP courses and summer programs.
The program's mission is to provide research and engagement experiences that teach students leadership and about how public policy works. The program has placed more than 8,000 students both abroad and closer to home in internships, fellowships and service-learning opportunities that combine a liberal arts education with the type of scholarship that only a research university can offer. As Duke continues to explore possibilities for student engagement, the lessons learned from HLP have been valuable. HLP is involved in the Duke Center for Civic Engagement, the new umbrella organization coordinating campus student engagement activities.

Mitch and Linda Hart, the benefactors of the program, also attended the weekend's activities, and Mitch Hart spoke about HLP's origins and the impressive growth of the program he has witnessed over the years. Student involvement continues to rise.
The events on Saturday included the launch of a new HLP website, an "Interactive History" that presents a series of timelines about the program's people, courses, history, and initiatives. Several people spanning years of HLP history presented their stories, and others were encouraged to share their own experiences via a new wiki site.
A keynote address by Mitch Hart was followed by several presentations from current students in HLP programs including Service Opportunities in Leadership and the Enterprising Leadership Initiative.
In the evening, HLP members had an opportunity to mingle in a relaxed atmosphere at an autumn-themed party replete with North Carolina barbeque, beer from local microbreweries, and square-dancing.
