Durham, NC -- More than 300 middle school students from Durham Public Schools came to the Duke campus Friday to get a better idea of college life and about teaching and learning at Duke University. The annual School Days event, sponsored by the Office of Community Affairs, pair groups of Durham students with Duke staff and students for a half-day tour of campus buildings, labs and classrooms.
Visiting students heard from basketball players Lindsay Harding and Jamal Boykin about what it takes to get into college.
The two encouraged the students to start good study practices now to ensure they earned the grades needed to enter college. President Richard H. Brodhead also welcomed the students.
Each student group visited a research site for a look at how faculty and students are studying subjects ranging from earthquakes to bugs to the human heart. Pictured, above, students visit the Bryan Center for a behind the scenes look at theater productions at the university.
After a tour of a campus, including a look at a residence hall, discussion with Duke students and visits to Bostock Library and Duke Chapel, the students concluded the program at the Griffith Film Theater with a presentation from a cappella group Speak of the Devil.
